Private Research and Development Institutions

Several nationally prominent private, non-profit research institutes have established significant centers in Virginia in recent years: SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research in the Shenandoah Valley; the National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Loudoun County.

National Institute of Aerospace: A strategic partner of NASA Langley Research Center and conducts leading-edge aerospace research and development through a consortium of research universities including Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, the College of William & Mary and the AIAA Foundation.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm Research Campus: The Janelia Farm Research Campus houses a world-class research center where scientists from many disciplines gather to collaborate closely, in small teams, on some of science's most challenging problems. The Janelia Farm complex includes a large laboratory building, conference facilities, and housing, all designed to blend into the natural surroundings of the site. The planning for both the scientific program and the campus facilities was intertwined, with each part overlapping and influencing the other.

SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE): Located at SRI Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia, CADRE's mission is to advance the state of the art to improve the productivity of the pharmaceutical industry, help our nation respond to biothreats, and develop life-saving treatments for neglected and orphan diseases. CADRE's goal is the creation of new diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for infectious and neglected diseases, and for biodefense. The Center combines SRI's well-established expertise in drug discovery, computational biology, and preclinical development with a new proteomic laboratory to develop these solutions.
