Eric Arocho with module background

Eric Arocho is associate vice president at Eli Lilly and Company and the site lead on the company’s facility in Goochland County, announced last year. The Goochland facility, expected to be completed within the next five years, will produce both critical drug components and finished medicines to support Lilly’s emerging bioconjugate platform and monoclonal antibody portfolio.

VEDP: Was there anything about Virginia’s approach — speed, partnership model, or long-term alignment — that surprised you or set it apart from peer regions?

Arocho: Goochland County was chosen from hundreds of applicants, and what stood out was the community’s readiness to grow with us. The Greater Richmond region has the talent, drive, and readiness to grow alongside us, and that matters deeply to Lilly. We’re not just building a facility here. We’re building a long-term partnership with a community we believe in, all in service of getting medicines to the patients who need them.

VEDP: The industry is rethinking supply chain resilience and domestic manufacturing. How does this Virginia investment support Lilly’s broader strategy to ensure reliable access to medicines for patients in the U.S. and globally?

Arocho: At the end of the day, this is about patients. A new U.S. manufacturing facility in Richmond gives us access to world-class talent and the capacity to innovate faster so we can reach more patients, more quickly.

VEDP: Talent is often the deciding factor in life sciences manufacturing. How did Virginia’s workforce, from engineers and technicians to research talent, influence Lillys decision?

Arocho: Richmond has an incredible talent base, and we intend to invest in it. That means showing up as a real partner, working alongside local colleges and community organizations to build meaningful career pathways into pharmaceutical manufacturing. This isnt just about filling jobs. Its about growing careers and building something lasting with the Richmond community. Those interested in joining Lilly should visit our Lilly in Richmond career page for current and future job opportunities.

VEDP: Five to 10 years from now, what would success look like for Lilly in Virginia, and how might your presence here evolve as the ecosystem continues to grow?

Arocho: First things first: I see Lilly Richmond being here for the long term. This is the first facility weve ever built from the ground up specifically for antibody-drug conjugates, and thats not a decision we take lightly. We believe these next-generation medicines have the potential to transform how we treat disease, and were deeply committed to seeing that through. Beyond the science, we know that where Lilly goes, opportunity follows. Were talking about more than 650 new high-wage jobs — engineers, scientists, lab technicians, operations personnel — and the kind of economic momentum that tends to lift an entire community. In the years to come, we hope to be a neighbor the Richmond area is proud to have.
