Standard Calibrations, Inc. to invest $9.6 million to construct new corporate headquarters

RICHMOND—Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Standard Calibrations, Inc. (SCI), a global instrumentation and controls company, will invest $9.6 million to construct a 40,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in the City of Chesapeake. The expansion will include the consolidation of the company’s two existing facilities in Chesapeake, along with the addition of a calibration lab and warehouse operations. Virginia successfully competed with North Carolina for this project, which will create 89 jobs.

“Supporting small businesses like SCI is key to maintaining a Virginia economy that is both diverse and resilient, and we are thrilled that the company has chosen to expand its headquarters in the Commonwealth,” said Governor Northam. “In addition creating 89 new jobs in the City of Chesapeake, SCI’s growth will have a positive ripple effect in several key areas of Virginia’s economy, including data centers, utilities, and the maritime industry.”

Founded in 1989, SCI has evolved into a leader in the industry of sensor and instrumentation calibration, repair, and configuration with an outstanding reputation for quality and safety. The company’s offerings include valves, instrumentation, test and measurement equipment, calibration/start-up services (ISO 17025-Accredited), critical environmental system configuration, engineering design, instrumentation qualification testing, and installation services. SCI meets customer needs around the world from its Virginia corporate office.

“SCI is a true Virginia success story, growing its facility from 900 square feet to 40,000 square feet since its founding in 1989,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball. “This small business within Virginia’s Small, Women- and Minority-owned business program, which now serves industry-leaders in hyper-scale data centers and cloud-based computing, will make its second large-scale investment in Virginia in just two years. We are proud that SCI has experienced such success and look forward to the company’s next chapter in the City of Chesapeake.”

“SCI considers this decision a solid stamp of approval for what the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Chesapeake have to offer from an economic development perspective, and we are proud to consider Chesapeake home,” said SCI President Floyd Cross. “SCI is listening to our customers’ needs, and we see our new Chesapeake facility as an opportunity to cut rising costs and improve efficiencies. We selected Virginia for our new corporate headquarters after reviewing opportunities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This location is ideal for supporting the region’s industrial base and allows rapid response for Naval Fleet and Special Warfare Operations. The focus of state and local government on transportation also ensures SCI’s ability to support hyperscale data centers and other customers globally. SCI is excited to support Governor Northam’s priority that every region, every community, and every household be able to participate in Virginia’s economic growth.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the City of Chesapeake to secure the investment opportunity for Virginia. Governor Northam approved a $250,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist the City of Chesapeake with the project. SCI may be eligible to receive Sales and Use tax exemptions on state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.

“Standard Calibrations Inc.’s decision to construct and expand its corporate headquarters is exciting news for Chesapeake,” said City of Chesapeake Mayor Rick West. “SCI’s steady and calculated growth has led to this moment, which is a testament to its leadership and employees who work hard every day to deliver quality services to its customers across the globe.  SCI is a shining example of how to grow a business through innovation and the positive results that follow. We’re proud of SCI’s accomplishments and look forward to celebrating many more years of their successes in Chesapeake.”

“I am proud to see that Standard Calibrations, Inc. is expanding their operations in the City of Chesapeake,”said Senator Lionell Spruill. “This not only creates additional jobs but also shows SCI’s confidence in our region and our workforce.”

“It is exciting to see Standard Calibrations, Inc. growing its business in the City of Chesapeake,” said Delegate James Leftwich. “SCI is a global leader in the high-profile data sector, and the 78th House District has benefited a great deal from its presence. SCI’s creation of 89 jobs paves the way for prosperity and smart growth within Hampton Roads. I look forward to working with SCI as a community partner and supporting the company’s future growth.”
