Wayne L. Sterling Receives Prestigious Award from Associated General Contractors of Virginia
Hot Springs, VA - Wayne L. Sterling, Executive Director of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), received the Special Recognition Award by the Associated General Contractors of Virginia (AGC) on January 18, 1997. The award was presented during AGC's annual convention held at the Homestead Resort.
The Special Recognition Award is given to a non-AGC member who has made a substantial contribution to the construction industry. Sterling is only the sixth recipient of this award in the past 30 years.
"Historically, this award has been made only after careful deliberation, to individuals deserving the highest degree of recognition that AGC can offer," said Steven C. Vermillion, Executive Director of AGC. "Mr. Sterling and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership have performed a phenomenal job at marketing the state of Virginia. Everyone has benefited from their efforts, especially the construction industry. We are proud and pleased to have Mr. Sterling in Virginia."
Before moving to Virginia, Sterling was the executive director of the Department of Commerce for the state of South Carolina from 1988 until 1994. A graduate of the Economic Development Institute of the University of Oklahoma, Sterling is a Certified Economic Developer and Fellow Member of the American Economic Development Council, which he serves as chairman. He holds a master's degree in economics and a juris doctor of laws degree from the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
Sterling joined the Commonwealth of Virginia as its Director of the Department of Economic Development in June, 1994. On July 1, 1996, Sterling was selected as the first Executive Director of the new Virginia Economic Development Partnership. The Partnership was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1995 to encourage, stimulate, and support the development and expansion of the economy of the Commonwealth.
