Expansion will mean investment of $26 million, 1,200 new jobs; nearly 2,000 total jobs possible
Hampton - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the expansion of the Gateway computer manufacturing facility in Hampton. The expansion will result in the creation of 1,200 new jobs and lead to an overall investment of over $26 million over the next three years. Nearly 2,000 new jobs may be created in the Hampton Roads and Peninsula regions as a result of Gateway¹s expansion.
"Gateway has firmly established itself as one of Virginia¹s most respected corporate citizens," Governor Gilmore said. "Gateway has proven its commitment to the Commonwealth and the company¹s expansion will provide new jobs and investment in Hampton. This announcement confirms Virginia¹s reputation as a magnet for high technology companies."
Gateway first announced its decision to locate a new computer manufacturing center in Hampton in 1995. Since then, the company has opened a technical support center in Hampton, and completed an additional expansion of the manufacturing facility. In total, Gateway has invested more than $36 million, over the course of the last three years, and is the city¹s largest private employer with 2,100 employees.
"Demand for Gateway products and services continues to grow at a rate far above the industry average," David J. Robino, Gateway¹s executive vice president and chief administrative officer, said. "To meet this demand, our operations in Hampton must grow as well. Our expansion plans in Hampton will help us meet the ever-increasing demand for technology and provide the best possible computer solutions to Gateway clients. The positive business climate and high-caliber employees in the area make Hampton the perfect site for continuing to grow our operations." Governor Gilmore, Robino, and Hampton Mayor Joe Spencer participated in the announcement.

The Governor approved $1,500,000 from the Governor¹s Opportunity Fund for the project. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the City of Hampton Department of Development assisted the company with its decision. The Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services, and the company will continue to receive state enterprise zone benefits.
