Netherlands-based company's U.S. headquarters relocation to bring new 100 jobs for Fairfax

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced the decision by Ahold USA to relocate its corporate headquarters to Fairfax County. The decision will result in the creation of 100 new jobs in Virginia, including positions from the company’s existing facility in Atlanta. Ahold USA has purchased a new building in the Corporate Pointe 2 office park in Chantilly and will occupy the facility by September.

"I am pleased to welcome Ahold USA to the Commonwealth," Governor Gilmore said. "Ahold is an internationally respected company that has clearly recognized the numerous benefits of doing business in Virginia, and specifically, Northern Virginia."

Ahold USA is the American subsidiary of Royal Ahold, a Netherlands-based holding company for supermarket chains around the world with annual sales exceeding $35 billion. As well as its ownership of BI-LO, Tops Markets, Stop & Shop, and Giant-Carlisle, Ahold USA recently acquired Giant Food, which operates stores throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The company has also announced its plans to acquire the Pathmark supermarket chain.

"We are excited about being in Virginia because of its excellent business climate," Ahold USA President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Tobin said. "Our new headquarters location puts us closer to our stores in the Northeast and allows good access to our parent company in the Netherlands."

"We are happy to welcome Ahold USA to the growing family of international corporations that call Fairfax County home," Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kate Hanley said. "We look forward to a long, mutually rewarding relationship and pledge our support to help the company grow and prosper."

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority worked together to assist the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
