Governor Gilmore Announces Intel's Selection of Fairfax County As Site for $130 Million Internet Ser

Virginia facility will be used for Intel's new Internet services hosting business

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Intel Online Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Intel, will locate a $130 million Internet service center in Fairfax County that is expected to create up to 250 new jobs. The service center will be comprised of thousands of computer servers running the websites and e-commerce activities of numerous companies. Although other states were considered by Intel, Virginia will be the first location for an Intel service center on the East Coast of the United States. Intel's other announced production Internet service center is located in Santa Clara, California. 

"Virginia is cementing its position as the Internet Capital of the World," Governor Gilmore said. "I am proud that Intel recognizes the tremendous potential and opportunity in our Commonwealth and has decided to locate this important new facility here." 

Intel will occupy a new 73,000 square-foot building in a site near Dulles Airport in Fairfax County. The company expects to hire up to 250 new employees when the facility is fully operational early in 2000. This facility is part of the new Intel Online Services subsidiary, which was formed this year to manage the hosting, storage, transacting and delivery of Web content and e-commerce services. Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading supplier of products and services for the Internet economy. 

"A large and growing proportion of the world's Internet traffic flows through Virginia," Mike Aymar, vice president and general manager of Intel Online Services, said. "That made Virginia a natural location for Intel's expanding Internet services hosting business." 

"Intel is clearly one of the world's most respected companies in the connected computing industry," Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry E. DuVal added. "We are pleased that Intel has decided to locate its first production Internet service center on the East Coast in Virginia, and we are certain that Intel will benefit from our highly skilled and educated workforce." 

Governor Gilmore approved a grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund in the amount of $200,000 to assist Fairfax County with site preparation. In making the selection, Intel worked closely with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services to the company. 

"I am thrilled that the Economic Development Authority and the county's planning and zoning offices were able to make the arrangements needed to get operation here going as quickly as possible," Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Katherine K. Hanley said.
