Tempur-Pedic to invest $14 million in new manufacturing facility in Duffield

Duffield - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Tempur-Pedic, Inc. will locate a new manufacturing facility in Scott County's Duffield Industrial Park. The company expects to create 265 new jobs through a $14 million investment.

"It is an honor to have Tempur-Pedic locate its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Virginia," Governor Gilmore said. "The creation of 265 new jobs is not only a testament to Virginia's strong economy, but great news for the people of Southwest Virginia."

Headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, Tempur-Pedic is the exclusive U.S. distributor of "Tempur" products. The company will manufacture mattresses, pillows, lumbar supports, and seat cushions made from a special temperature-sensitive polyurethane foam. NASA engineers originally developed this unique pressure-relieving material. Until now, the company's products were being produced exclusively in Denmark.

"We are delighted to locate this manufacturing plant in Virginia," Tempur-Pedic Inc. Chief Operating Officer David Fogg said. "We believe this is the best location to begin a prosperous venture with Scott County and the Commonwealth of Virginia."

"This new investment will provide many employment opportunities for the people of Scott County," Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry E. DuVal added. "The Commonwealth is committed to maintaining a strong manufacturing base."

Governor Gilmore approved a grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund in the amount of $550,000 to assist Scott County with site preparation. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Duffield Industrial Development Authority, the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority and Scott County assisted the company with its location decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services. The Virginia Department of Transportation will contribute industrial road access funding for the project. The Virginia Small Business Financing Authority will assist Tempur-Pedic with financing.
