Governor Gilmore hails major investment in Virginia by Swiss company

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore has announced Lawson Mardon Packaging, a Switzerland-based specialty packaging manufacturer will locate a new facility in Chesterfield, County, Virginia. The company will invest $45 million in the plant while creating up to 150 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed with North Carolina for the investment.

"This impressive investment brings high-paying job opportunities for Virginians," said Governor Gilmore. "Lawson Mardon's decision to locate in Chesterfield County confirms the attractiveness of the County, the Greater Richmond region, and the Commonwealth as a great place to do business."

Lawson Mardon is a world leader in specialty packaging products for the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and tobacco industries. The company is part of the Algroup Corporation, one of Switzerland's largest corporations, with headquarters in Zurich.Lawson Mardon intends to begin construction of the plant by mid-August.

"We are pleased to be purchasing land and building our new plant at River's Bend in Chesterfield County," said Ron Syrkos, Algroup Lawson Mardon Vice President and General Manager. "Virginia's quality of life, attractive workforce, and commitment to maintaining a positive business climate were instrumental in our decision." 

"The Lawson Mardon project is an exciting development for the Greater Richmond region," said Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Barry E. DuVal. "This decision confirms Virginia's growing reputation as an attractive location for new business." 

Governor Gilmore approved a $450,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund to assist Chesterfield County with land acquisition and site preparation. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Greater Richmond Partnership and Chesterfield County assisted the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services. The Virginia Department of Transportation will provide $300,000 from the Virginia Industrial Access Road Program to assist with road construction costs.
