Evercel to employ 180 and invest $25 million in manufacturing plant

Richmond - Governor Jim Gilmore today announced that Evercel, a company that develops and manufactures rechargeable batteries and battery components for use in consumer products and electric vehicles, will locate Evercel's North America manufacturing operations in Newport News. The company will invest $25 million in the project and hire 180 new employees over the next three years. Virginia successfully competed with Connecticut for the investment.

"I am honored to announce that Evercel will locate their manufacturing operations in Newport News," said Governor Gilmore. "The company's investment will be a tremendous addition to the local economy while providing valuable jobs for the people of the Peninsula."

Evercel (EVRC: NASDAQ) is the world leader in manufacturing of high performance Nickel Zinc batteries for a wide range of applications, including scooters, trolling motors for boats, electric bicycles, electric vehicles, lawn mowers, electric wheelchairs and golf carts. Evercel will occupy its Newport News facility during August and immediately begin installation of its first automated manufacturing line. The company will begin manufacturing its patented Trolling Motor Marine Batteries for the North America Sport Fishing market this fall.

"Evercel selected Newport News based upon superior quality of life issues, competitive manufacturing costs and the available skilled workforce," said Robert L. Kanode, Evercel President & CEO. "We believe the excellent business environment of Virginia will enhance our future growth."

"I am delighted that Evercel is contributing to the economic growth of Newport News and the entire Peninsula region," said Barry E. DuVal, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. "As our newest corporate citizen, Evercel will join the Commonwealth's impressive list of manufacturers."

"I am delighted that this energetic company is going to invest in our city," said Newport News Mayor Joe S. Frank. "I want to thank Governor Gilmore for his leadership in supporting this emerging technology company by approving a $500,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund."

Governor Gilmore approved a Governor's Opportunity Fund grant in the amount of $500,000 to assist Newport News with site preparation. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development and the City of Newport News assisted the company with its decision. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide workforce training services.
