Growing the Cloud from Virginia

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world's most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud, is continually growing its business and tech workforce to address demand. In 2017, AWS began a site selection search to find a new corporate campus on the East Coast devoted to its cloud computing services.

Virginia offers sales and use tax exemptions for eligible equipment used directly in manufacturing and research and development operations. Prior to exemptions, the Commonwealth’s combined state and local sales and use tax is 5.3% (4.3% state tax and 1.0% local tax).

Virginia offers a data center retail sales and use tax exemption (DCRSUT Exemption) on qualifying computer equipment or enabling software purchased or leased for use in certain data centers in the Commonwealth meeting minimum investment and job creation requirements as outlined below.

The DCRSUT exemption is available beginning July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2035, unless the company meets the investment and job creation provisions required for an extension of the DCRSUT outlined further below.  

The Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP) is a discretionary incentive that provides funding and services to qualifying companies to support new job creation or upskilling in conjunction with new or expanding operations. The cash grant and accompanying services are intended to offset a company’s recruitment and training costs.

UDig invests $1.6 million to expand IT headquarters operation

RICHMOND - Governor Ralph Northam today announced that UDig, a consulting firm that develops technology business solutions, has invested $1.6 million to expand its IT headquarters operation in Henrico County. The company purchased the 23,000-square-foot Page building located in the Forest Office Park. Virginia successfully competed against Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. for the project, which will create 51 new jobs.
